A rare form of an autoimmune disease called myositis weakens and irritates muscle fibers. When the immune system of the body attacks the body, autoimmune disorders develop. Myositis is a condition in which the immune system destroys healthy muscle tissue, causing discomfort, edema, inflammation, and eventually weakness. The condition is known as polymyositis if the skin is not affected. Dermatomyositis is the term used when there is involvement of the skin. Myositis can affect different parts of the body in different patients. Myositis typically affects the muscles in the upper arms and thighs, making it difficult to raise the arms over the head and get out of a chair. Others may have trouble swallowing, while others may feel symptoms in their lungs, such as difficulty breathing. Most patients are between the ages of 30 and 60 when initially diagnosed, and women are more than twice as likely to receive a diagnosis as males. Juvenile myositis is the name given to the condition in people under the age of 20 and may require a different course of treatment.
